What is Hepatocellular carcinoma?

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of primary liver cancer.
 

Who is impacted?

Most of the time, hepatocellular carcinoma occurs in people who have chronic liver disease such as cirrhosis or infections caused by hepatitis B or hepatitis C.
 

How is Hepatocellular carcinoma diagnosed?

The following tests and procedures are used to diagnose hepatocellular carcinoma:
  • Blood tests
  • Imaging tests
  • Liver biopsy

How is Hepatocellular carcinoma treated?

Treatment is primarily based on the size and location of hepatocellular carcinoma as well as the functioning of the liver and overall health of the patient:
  • Surgery
  • Liver transplant surgery
  • Destroying cancer cells with heat or cold (ablation procedures)
  • Chemotherapy and/or radiation
  • Targeted drug therapy
